Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and others quit the show. Moffat chose her due to how well she could work with Smith as well as the fact that she was faster at speaking than Smith.
